Whoever said that money can't buy happiness, simply didn't know where to go shopping - Bo Derek

Suffering from choice overload?

Suffering from choice overload?

OK, first things first… I am not for one minute suggesting that money does, in itself, buy happiness!  However, I do believe that, as we are faced with more and more choices as consumers, and everyone is feeling the pinch (with the possible exception of Russian oligarchs), there is something to be said in knowing where to shop.  Or, more precisely, what to shop for… that is, which products and brands actually live up to their hype.

And therein lies my central reason for starting this website.

This is a project that I have been meaning to get started for quite some time, and it is one that I will be devoting a lot of my time to.  I do seem to have acquired a wealth of knowledge about all kinds of beauty products over the years, mainly through my never-ending quest for that ‘holy grail’ product.  I also have a background in scientific research, which means I understand the science behind how products work.  I am knowledgeable about ingredients and what they do (or don’t do); I understand their potential benefits and the levels they need to be used at to deliver those benefits.  And, just as importantly, I can see through the pseudo-scientific marketing claptrap we are fed all the time.

Hold the front page... not all products are as effective as they claim!

Hold the front page… not all products are as effective as they claim!

In short, because of my obsession with beauty products, combined with my scientific knowledge, I know a good product when I see one.  I also know when I’m being sold a beautiful-looking bottle of snake oil!

My focus is on discovering and reviewing products that stand out above the rest, and I like to seek out and give you the low-down on new and innovative brands and ranges before and as they emerge.  Many of the products I review are, by their very nature, at the more ‘premium’ end of the price spectrum.  However, I don’t believe you always have to pay premium prices for products that deliver results. The technologies behind the high-end products are increasingly filtering down into more affordable drugstore brands, and I am constantly trying to hunt down great drugstore dupes for cult premium price products, so you don’t have to!

3jarsdOh, and if I come across a product that has been hyped as the saviour of womankind, but I don’t think it’s really all that, I’ll tell you so.  I’m fiercely independent in my reviews, and am not (and never will be) in the pocket of any brand or retailer.

I also dabble in formulating my own products.  Some of my posts will include tips, tricks and observations from this pastime.

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I have way too much to say for myself.  So over the years, my friends and family (who have been at the receiving end of my recommendations for beauty products every Christmas and birthday) have been telling me I should put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) and start writing some of my ramblings down.

They do say you should write about what you know, so I thought I would give it a go!

I do hope you find some of these ramblings useful, and that they help you to navigate the minefield of the thousands of products that we are bombarded with with every time we open a magazine, walk into a store, or switch on the TV.  So please do leave a comment on my posts, or get in touch through the Contact page, and let me know what you think.

If you don’t find this site useful, blame my family and friends!
